Another tributary with nice waterfalls in Wong Lung Han area. Steadily steep, with some scrambling sections & fewer people than the latter.

  • Beauty/fun: 7/10 the water flow is medium, so you will not need as much rain as in the Northern tributaries (North Dragon, Dragon’s Jaw…) for it to look pretty. The water is not as clean. The mess on top reduces slightly the marks.
  • Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 7/10 There are ribbons guiding you. There are easier side paths to avoid the most difficult climbs. Only the upper part of the second big waterfall section requires you to scramble close to the waterfall itself. The upper part was badly damaged by Mangkhut and the prior easy connection with Wong Lung Hang Country Trail now is a jungle crossing. There are still hikers going up the stream and in each outing we have removed some broken trees and opened the vegetation. So I guess that sooner or later a clearer path will be available. August 2020 update: way more clear path and ribbons (orange) to the civilized path exactly on the stream itself. Still significantly different than lower sections, open jungle path.
  • The map (how to download to your phone)

See full screen and the Garmin track.

Transportation. MTR Tung Chung Station. You could take a taxi from there and try to convince the driver to take you up to the barrier, marked on the map. Some are not willing to. Otherwise, you will be walking for a bit more than 3 kilometers on concrete.

You will start exactly in the same direction as Wong Lung Han. At the very end of the concrete road, head into the stream and start going up.

The entrance to the Hidden Dragon tributary is not obvious. You might pass it if you don’t pay attention. Check the GPS and ribbons heading up a right tributary. Exactly here it is the connection with the main stream. You can even see some of the waterfalls up there.

The slope increases from the very beginning.

Smaller falls till you arrive at the first big waterfall here, just behind me.

Look for ropes and ribbons on the right side of the fall to scramble up.

You do not need to use the mentioned ropes. If you do check their condition!

If you have really good grip shoes you can scramble up this first big waterfall really close to it. Otherwise, find an easier way to go a bit further right. There are ribbons that will guide you around and back to the stream. You have another pool and a slider-type waterfall above. Mildly sloped enough so that you can scramble it up to the top as I was doing here.

You can do it also on the right side rocks otherwise.

In no time you will arrive at the bottom of the second big waterfalls section. Another nice pool to dip into and enjoy the shower.

And scramble again on the right side of it. This time you will get further from the stream

and you will need to scramble back down to reconnect.

For weaker hikers, this might be the trickiest section. The path is next to the waterfall itself.

On the very top is the last pool and waterfall with a tunnel behind.

You can climb it up within the tunnel. Tight, tight. Otherwise, there are side paths around the rock both left and right.

The slope reduces moving forward

although you can find some waterfalls (with no pools). Once you arrive here is where you will need to decide the route to follow.

There are different ribbon paths around. But we were not able to find the best way yet. There were quite some trees down and the vegetation was quite dense in several sections.

After talking with several groups there lately, it seems that the best option is to try to reconnect with the stream itself and not go 50m apart as we did ourselves. Do not follow big construction ribbons around… August 2020, confirmed. The easiest way is closest to the stream itself. Way more open with groups that have passed with pruners and machete/saw.

In any case, with a bit of patience in a bit more than 20 minutes, you should be able to reconnect with the main Wong Lung Han country trail. Head down. Easy version through the steep stairs connecting back with the concrete road you had been walking on. More fun through Tung Lung stream (dark blue line on the map).

Video with more visual clues

Sept 2022: We went very slowly up Hidden Dragon

and down Tung Lung. 9th pic within the tiny tunnel, this time with the torch to illuminate it properly. The upper jungle section is even further open now. So in the video above at 2m40sec mark try to continue as close to the stream as possible. In our case, we just climbed the tiny right waterfall that you can see in front of Ina (good handholds and can be dry frequently) and just continue up.

Everything you should know before stream hiking.
