Small stream only good after heavy rain. A few high falls & a “peculiar” initial section in the cemetery, with discarded tombstones & others…

I continued checking small streams. This time Janis was ready for a short day out. We met in Chai Wan MTR station and we headed towards the Chai Wan Masjid, a mosque & Muslim cemetery. Just on the upper entry on the road (1) the point where we got into the stream.

It looked that hikers had opened a way in through the bush. A few meters and in the stream. “Ehhh… Have you check what is that in the water?” A marble tombstone… We don’t know if discarded or that came down due to old typhoons. We would find quite a few of them.

Eventually, we arrived at a small tunnel (1:00) and just after we exited the stream. There was a big net in the middle and bushy, so we went up the cemetery stairs. We doubted if to connect immediately again with the stream (slightly bushy already) or continue up the concrete. We did the latter and ehhh… we needed to jump a fence and later scramble up the concrete reinforcement (1:29) under the catchwater (2). Not the best option.

In the catchwater is where most hikers get into the stream. Clear cut vegetation and a few ribbons. We were not lucky. Even if a typhoon was approaching, that day and the previous few were completely dry and the flow was minimal. Janis dipped into any significant pool to cool down. Next potential exit, the concrete Hong Kong Trail section 8 (3 – 2:02). The next section is the nicest after significant rain, with a few waterfalls (mainly dry for us) and small pools and a few open spots with views of the city below. Some thorny bush too. At (4 – 3:00) there is a 45° longish waterfall. More bush. Last waterfall and the last completely dry exit towards the peak of Mount Collinson. There were a few fallen trees and not the most clear path. So just continue looking for ribbons or cut vegetation.

From here you could connect with the Dragon’s Back or several others. In our case, we went to the upper section Fung Mun stream one of the Big Wave streams, and trail run looped back to the start.

A video of Meko on a heavy rain day going first up this one and then through other tiny ones in the area.
