There are several rock “gardens” or “forests” in HK. Piles of bare volcanic rocks covering significant areas in the middle of nowhere. Here one of the biggest.

You can combine it with either Luk Chau stream or Shek Lung Chai stream for a longer day out. Here the shortest options.

Tai Shui Hang MTR station, Chevalier Gardens exit. Walk to the aforementioned building complex and cross any of the bridges to Mui Tsz Lam road. Walk on it, concrete uphill, till you arrive at this bridge.

Cross it, scramble up for few meters in the opposite side and find your way up through Shek Lung Chai Trail. Rock and dirt (muddy after rain) path up till Ng’s Ancestral Hall. Just next to the little temple (watch video) head NE direction. Initially within dense vegetation but tons of ribbons too.

There are several entry points. Here through the Northernmost.

And time to scramble on the volcanic rocks.

You can go as high

or easy as you want. With tons of places to take your pics.

There are ribbons in the connections between the two separated sections. Although in our case we did not follow the usual route. Just some meters more North (our route marked on the map) to scramble all rocks possible.

Once on the very top you will find more ribbons and faint paths within the bushes to go out. Video with all the previous.

You have not finished all the fun though yet.

There are several “named” rocks: Canoe, crocodile mouth (鱷魚張口), lizard (蜥蜴石) and sword rock. The first three because they look like

and the third due to the cuts “made with a mighty sword”.

I have heard also some others calling the latter Fire stone. Too many names as per each ones imagination. Continue on the clear path SE direction and you will arrive at this shelter.

Connection with the MacLehose trail. Tons of different options from here, being the Ma On Shan family walk one of the easiest to go back down to the city (green line). I have marked a minibus (NR84) stop point. They are infrequent, but in case of need you can give it a try. There are even taxis going up there. Otherwise, continue down on the concrete towards the city.

Pics of Nov18 starting in Luk Chau stream, bushwalking, a short visit to the main fall of Shek Lung Chai stream and rock forest, all in one not especially long day (kinda fast ladies).

And the easiest route trying to avoid concrete +visit the main fall in Jan 2019 (map here) in approx 2h30min up to the connection with the MacLehose trail.

Shortest route possible MTR to MTR (if including the waterfall) on Nov 2019
