蝦公坑 (Shrimp Stream) is a cute, small, & easy stream meanwhile you exit it halfway through. For those looking for less hiked routes.

  • Beauty/fun: 5.5/10 clear water with tons of small fish (& I guess shrimps, although I didn’t see any), several pools where to cool down, small waterfalls. Slightly bushy exit even if you take the correct one.
  • Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 4.5/10 if leaving halfway through. Almost no high scrambles in/next to waterfalls, and those have with decent foot and handholds. You will need a fully waterproof bag if you want to cross the pools. Add at least one difficulty point if you try to go up the second section of the stream and bush walk exit. A bit more difficult on the red line.

It was a fun surprise to discover this stream. Really close to a very busy picnic site in Shing Mun reservoir. A tranquil stream with a few big pools almost from the get go. I first checked it on my own a few years ago when I was exploring every path & stream around Needle Hill. As mentioned in the previous post, I brought Ana & Mica there after Chou Shing stream.

The entry is here.

In no time we arrived at the first pool. You can by pass them all on their sides. Or swim/wade them like Mica. A bit later a mini gorge.

And the biggest of the pools and double waterfall.

Ana without a waterproof bag passed them both on the left while Mica was enjoying it all. Approx 15 minutes later we arrived at the principal exit. The first time I didn’t even see it. This time it was more clear. Nevertheless check the GPS if you want to take it.

If not, the stream continues up. It gets bushier with significantly less hiker traffic. There are still a significant pool and smaller falls. Crystalline water. But the exit this way requires dense bush walking. Full clothe coverage and pruners recommended.

With them I went through the red dryish tributary. Slightly shorter but way steeper and even denser last meters.

The original route I took had water for a longer while and got thorny atop. Easier exit through the forest towards MacLehose.

In any case, this second section is only recommended for those who enjoy jungle crossing. If not, just take the aforementioned exit and once in MacLehose decide how to go down. The second time we jog down to Tai Wai.
