昂深石澗 Ngon Sam Stream now looks cleaner and it continues to be more spectacular than its twin Nei Sham. A bit far but definitely a good one.

See full screen & the Garmin track.

Previous times I had avoided this tributary as friends had told me that, even beautiful, the water quality was really bad and created itchiness. Therefore we ended up in Nei Sham. After years of construction in Ngon Ping, it seemed that the water was not so bad and we decided to give it a try. And to make it more fun and avoid the long concrete path approach from Tung Chung, we did the interesting part of the coasteering from Sha Lo wan to Sham Wat first.

Once in the village we went up the road and started the scrambles up the stream.

The main waterfall with the pool and the little tunnel behind the water curtain.

Continue up and here is the fork where to take the right tributary this time. Better flow Nei Sham on the left.

Janis wanted to challenge herself & climb as many waterfalls as possible.

This one was definitely too high for her and the three of us climbed it on its right side. Crossing it almost on the very top. 2m below the top there is a small “platform”. With higher flow, it might be tricky.

A bit later another high waterfall with a clear side path with ribbons on its left.

And arrive at the second highlight of the route called 千層瀑 (thousand layers waterfall). The flow was not great, but the rocks were extra slippery. Janis here giving it a try but finally heading left, where there is a clear path with ribbons, easiest to go up to just some meters downstream.

We had a small misunderstanding here though. They should have come down approximately 10m upper than from where I took the upper left pic. Exactly at 16m53s of this video you can see it where.

I thought that the path would bring them back to the stream, but nope… I should have researched before heading there 🤦‍♂️ So basically in their case they just hiked a steep slightly muddy path till they connected with the main path above. Missing quite some of the final fun. On my own, I scrambled next to the waterfall on its right first. Then I crossed to the left side trying to find a way for them to connect back. But not possible.

So a short phone call and continue on my own. The scrambling is relatively clear, I even found some ribbons around. There are a few waterfalls above and the last one on between a small gorge that you can

scramble on its left looking upstream. Very spectacular pictures here, for example from Sankala’s web. It was easier for me with the Five Ten than it looks in those. Connect directly with the constructions above. Meet with the guys. Apologize. And let them go towards the bus stop while I started my run back down to Tung Chung through the Donkey Trail under the cable car.

Everything you should know before stream hiking.
