Wo Lei pit or stream is a short easy one good for beginners on its own or to enjoy as a side plan of other bigger entertainments in the area.

  • Beauty/fun: 5.5/10 fun sliders to throw yourself down through if doing it downhill, several pools, and smaller waterfalls. Less interesting second section.
  • Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 4.5/10 if doing the two sections and you are OK with getting fully wet at least once. Add an extra point if you want to keep your upper body dry as you will need to climb on a slippery side small “cliff” otherwise. Overall easy to climb waterfalls, with easy side rocky paths. The upper section requires some bushy navigation. If just doing the lower section in wet mode this goes down to 3.5/10.

This year we have been there twice. As already mentioned, after going up Tai Yuen Right we went down half this stream. Even if the former did not have much water, Wo Lei (禾梨坑 = Pear pit) itself was fun sliding down a few of the short waterfalls.

A few months later we did it all up before heading to the rock forests. Here explained in this upstream mode.

The closest public transportation option is the mini buses going up to Shing Mun reservoir. Walk on concrete for a while and the entrance is here.

Tons of old pipelines initially. Easy on the slippery rocks.

A bit later you might find a tarp and quite some stuff around. Someone started to build his shelter there, dogs included… Pass through the water if necessary and just after a tricky, if wet, scramble (me seeing them from above in the upper left pic) or otherwise just get fully wet (Alexa in the upper right pic in the same spot a minute before).

Just a little later a small tunnel that you can cross.

All this first section continues in the same fashion. Small waterfalls. All of the climbable within. I put only once the rope to help Alexa. You could avoid it going on the rocks on her left-hand side.

Cute but little more.

Here you have the mid-way exit. A clear path that you can take to go back to the starting point for a really short outing.

If you continue up the water flow reduces significantly.

Clearly way less hiked. With dense vegetation in a few sections. Eventually, the stream got completely dry and we came out to the relatively clear path heading both East and West.

If you want to finish fast I would go East and down to the starting point. Marked brown line on the map above. If you are ready for more fun continue up the various rock forests.

Everything you should know before stream hiking.
