Another stream in the Ng Tung Chai system. For those who want to continue exploring all or even try it together with the wellknown waterfalls, for a long day out.

  • Beauty/fun: 6/10 jungle stream with relative low flow, a few bigger waterfalls and tons of small ones, some slider mode. Tiny mines & tons of old man made terraces (I think indigo was cropped there). Slightly overgrown and thorny in a few areas.
  • Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 5.5/10 the higher waterfalls have side paths to pass through, slightly muddy slippery, no potential early exits but through dense jungle, upper section is not clear, overgrown dry creek. 6.5/10 if doing it downhill as we did. 8.5/10 if trying to climb all the waterfalls (be careful!)

After a couple of weeks of hot and dry weather, I decided to bring friends to Ng Tung stream. MTR to Kam Sheung Road or Tai Wo stations & bus or taxi to Ng Tung Chai. Just before the start huge thunderstorm and almost continuous rain the whole morning.

Therefore stream with perfect strong flow.

Once on Scatter Fall, Miguel & Alexa wanted to leave and I guided them to the path down. Simon and I went up for a little while and head towards the top of Kadoorie Farm. Just before the fence and gate that marks its territory start going down towards Kai Kung pit 雞公坑. It is always easier to explore a new stream going up, but once we did it the opposite direction, here explained that way.

The upper part is slightly bushy and not clear, dry. But following the GPS it was easy to find the stream.

Just a little creek atop, it improves the lower you go. Marked on the map the first interesting spot: a high double waterfall with two mine prospectings at the bottom.

Both are quite short, but one of them had a big bat “family”, 20+

Just a bit lower, another nice spot. It was quite slippery and I decided to set up the thin rope to be extra safe. Going up should be easier. Just after the initial drop, a fun line fall to go down in.

There are several broken trees in the stream. Be careful. Some of them can look sturdier than they really are.

We saw in several sections these red aerial roots. And continuously small waterfalls to climb

or slide down on.

Remember to look right and left every now and then. Simon was not even realizing of the man-made structures around, just focused on the stream, till I mentioned them to him. Similar to other places on this side of the mountain, full of terraces. Old abandoned agriculture spots.

Here the biggest waterfall. It can be climbed within (read the last paragraph) or next to it, on its right, through sturdy roots side “path”. Simon going down through it.

At the bottom of the stream, there is another picturesque waterfall and we came down to

a man-made little pool and the main hiking path to Ng Tung waterfalls next to the monastery.

Concrete paths down to any of the bus stop on Lam Kam road, where we had started, in approx 20 minutes.

A couple of posts in Chinese. By Sankala to see the pics in the correct order, bottom up. And by wildconquerors, to see how to climb some of the waterfalls, if you are good at it (bring a rope just in case).

Everything you should know before stream hiking.
