I was trying to find a fun way to go to the Penis rock, but this Loi Po Sai stream (女婆西坑) is not especially interesting. Only recommended for those trying to conquer all streams in HK.

  • Beauty/fun: 3/10 Your typical jungle obscure stream. It does not have much water flow. Not especially nice waterfalls. Dense vegetation and thorny in some areas. There are significantly easier ways to go up if you are just interested in the peculiar rock.
  • Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 6.5/10 The navigation is not complicated, there is basically only one point where you could feel not sure which tributary to go up through (marked on the map below). There are ribbons in most of the path, but the vegetation can be really dense and you might need to use pruning scissors or else to open your way if trying to do the full stream up. I saw some ribbons guiding you out midway the stream towards the Northern slopes towards Shing Mun Springs. It might be a good option, although I have not tried it. Upper there is nothing especially interesting, but a little section of the stream within a bamboo passageway. Very slippery rocks in quite some sections.
  • Map (how to download to your phone)

See full screen and Garmin track.

The closest MTR station is Shek Mun. Head North East. Pass the highway through one of the bridges and start going up A Kung Kok Shan road. In no time you will see the Shatin Hospital on your left and the stream on your right.

The exit from the stream is through very dense bushes. Last time there (April 2019) there were ribbons guiding you out, but the path is not hiked frequently, so you might find it difficult. The GPS was quite accurate, although I decided to give it a try to a side path with more ribbons that finally also connected with the wider path up. Moving on (darker blue line) it is significantly easier. Still, you will be surrounded by vegetation. But I have founder hikers always in weekends in this path and therefore more open. I have marked the green line down as a possible early exit. Otherwise, if you continue on the blue, you will go a bit down and up till you find the impressive Buffalo Hill in front and the Penis rock (元陽石) below. There are interesting rocks around and some Buddhist tiny statues around.

The easiest way back to civilization is the Mui Fa ancient trail marked on the map too.

Everything you should know before stream hiking.
