Lower Shing Mun reservoir provides a nice short stream and adventure hike. It can be added to a day of tunnels or others above.
- Beauty/fun: 4/10 A cute little waterfall, good looking rocks, peculiar pipeline hiking. OK as a backup or additional route to plans above. Too short & bit too much concrete for being a recommended route on its own.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 3/10 Scrambling is minimal, short, simple navigation, just beware of rusty structures.

Get into the main dam of the reservoir. Cross the fence and down we go the steep stairs.
Different places where you can get in closer to the water.
Swimming officially not allowed in the reservoirs, kids… But looks tempting, right? 😛
The only significant waterfall in nice boulder area. Later on, the rocks become smaller and the hike is kind of simple.
Find your way up till the not very secure looking bridge…
You could avoid it with a bit more of bush walking. In any case, in no time you will see the huge pipeline. Time to decide if you want to 1) cross to the North shore and continue next or on the pipeline (blue line).
The hiking is simple. You will continuously be around the pipeline till you arrive at the concrete section.
2) You could continue on the North shore closer to the reservoir. I have marked on the map a brown line where you have an easy exit connecting back with the pipeline path.
3) Go up stairs (green line) and walk on a partly dirt path, partly water catch structure.
In any case, you will arrive at the Main dam of the Lower Shing Mun reservoir. Walking from there to Tai Wai station is around half an hour.
Some more pics (disregard the last three) and a video taken in Dec 2017
Going this time up in 2019, after taking a taxi to the Dam.
