Another interesting way up to Lantau Peak. A little cave, steep paths, and picturesque cliffs included.
- Beauty/fun: 7/10 On a clear day the views are spectacular. There are a couple of shallow caves, nice for the picture. Same, same for the cliff.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 5.5/10 The paths around are frequently hiked and kind of clear, with just a couple of misleading junctions. One of the cliffs is not suitable for those with even mild vertigo, really high and exposed, be careful.
- Map
See full screen and the Garmin track of Tung Chung to North Heaven’s, North Heaven’s to Wisdom Path, Wisdom Path to Lo Hon, Lo Hon Gap to Lantau trail through White Jaw path.
There are several ways up (my favorite below). The most used starts in Tung Chung MTR station (blue line). Head West-Southwest. You can avoid the initial street walking section with minibus or taxi up till Shek Mun Kap toilet.
Follow the concrete path until Fa Hong monastery. Continue walking on the concrete path Ngong Ping direction and little later you will find the dirt path on your left, here.
It is not especially obvious, so check the GPS if necessary. Moving forward the path gets significantly steeper. You will be, most surely, using your hands in several parts, initially within the woods, later with views of the city below.
Nice bamboo forest passageway.
Soon you will be able to see your next destination. Zoom on the pic to clearly see the cave and Lo Hon tower on its left.
The latter can be climbed. Here we doing so.
But just to see the views around.
Be careful here. Climbing wall-like cliff (you might find bolts and ropes) on the North side. Scramble down the same way you came up and find the way to the cave through the bushes.
The cave is quite shallow but nevertheless allows you to have a nice pic.
You are in a four-way fork here (including the path you came up through). If you are in a rush (due to a sudden weather change or any other reason) take the NW winding path just above the cave. The fastest route to Lantau trail. If not head to Lo Hon gap.
Steep downhill on a rocky path till you arrive at the next junction. Last time there it was full of ribbons.
Head upwards or you will be hiking into White Jaw path (more info below). After the aforementioned fork the path is quite clear: up, up, up.
Later you will arrive at the cliff that most people associate this path with. The pass is really high & not wide.
There might be ropes set, but be careful. Some are quite old and in any case, you should be wary of gear not set up by you. You can do it without them. The drop from the opposite side and some hikers not enjoying the crossing…
Continue your ascent
and in no time you will arrive to the North Heaven Gate. With the views to the South of the island.
Clear path to Lantau Peak.
From here you can just take the Lantau trail and go down to either Ngong Ping, West and steeper, or Tung Chung road, East and bit more gentle downhill. If you want to continue the fun you can. I have marked three more paths in the area.
The green path will take you to Ngong Ping too but through a bit more adventurous route. Initially, you will be walking on a grassy area. Later bit more sandy and steep. You can use your hands holding the bushes or trees around. There is again a narrow path not suitable for those with vertigo and finally, a “rock river” that you will need to hike down through, with the Wisdom Path clearly in front of you.
The end of the green path and the start of the orange are exactly there, next to the Wisdom Path.
The orange is a bit easier initially. Avoiding the rock river and any cliff, through a dirt path upwards. The upper you go, once you pass the connection with the green path (marked in red), the woods get nicer and you have several very photogenic spots like this passageway
the helmet rock, and finally an (even) shallower cave that usually has water dropping from a creek above. Climb a little higher and you will arrive at Lo Hon again.
Aforementioned White Jaw path (purple line) starts at the bottom of Lo Hon gap. Continue SE direction. You will keep the Tower behind you for a long while.
Hiking mainly on the lower part of a cliff. The path is not specially difficult but for this part.
The wall is 4 meters high and complicated to climb without the rope. There was one set last time there (Apr18) but take your own 10m for helping weaker friends just in case. Later on, you will be going up and down gently.
You will come through the grass on the right of the Lantau trail, more or less here.
If I would need to choose one way I prefer the way up from Wisdom Path. Start on green, cross red to orange, see the passageway, rocks, and caves and after Lo Hon go up through North Heaven Gate to Lantau Peak.

A really sad reminder of the dangers of doing this kind of routes… See the news below.
