Jardine’s NE tunnels

There are tons of tunnels all around Hong Kong. I was trying to set a short hiking route visiting as many interesting ones as possible in one go.

Caving basics

There are a few caves, mines, and tunnels in Hong Kong that you can explore. Here the very basics that you need to consider.

Tungsten mines

From 1935 to 1967 tungsten was mined under Needle Hill. Remains of the buildings, tunnels, and others are still there within the growing vegetation, ready to be explored.

Ma On Shan mine

Close to the now urban area of Ma On Shan the biggest mining activity in Hong Kong was recorded in the 20th century. Remains are still there.

Gin Drinkers Line tunnels

Easy hike, some “caving”, testing navigation skills and visiting part of Hong Kong’s history close to the city. Good dry winter plan.

Lin Ma Hang

Bushwalking, the border, the restricted areas recently open for the public, an old mine… A nice little adventure up North next to Shenzhen.

Lamma, tunnels & more

Quite some people hike the main pier to pier concrete crowded path in Lamma. Here a bit of everything else that the island can offer.

Trip series: Son Doong

Quite some people ask me about outdoor/adventurous traveling destinations. Here a caving adventure to start a dedicated section.

Tunnel in HK trail

Short WW2 tunnel next to the main trail in Hong Kong Island.
