A picturesque (mostly in Instagram way) mangrove, clear water, some nice sandy areas, tiny interesting rocks and no more in this area.
- Beauty/fun: 2/10 not recommended but for the hardcore “want to see it all”s, or if you want your Instagram picture, or super easy kayak outing.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 2/10 completely sheltered from swell and mostly wind waves. While kayaking you only need to take care of boats. The coasteering is more wading than else, with no real scrambling.

I had already kayaked the tiny islets in the Tolo Channel. Center Island on its own didn’t look too interesting. But then I saw that people were taking pics of the mangroves, and there is also another island that I hadn’t checked… OK… Added to the list of easy days out.
The most difficult thing was to get the kayaks. Running around I saw that there were tons of sit on top kayaks on the Southern part of Wu Kai Sha beach. But I was not able to find who/how they were rented. This shop in Google Maps was not reachable.
Later we found My Canoe Club 我的獨木舟會. Active but requiring to have the official Government kayak certificate 😅 None of my regular coasteering buddies have it. Even if we have been already kayaking in quite some places in HK. Definitely in a lot trickier places than this one 🤷♂️ In any case, Alexa and her husband are 3 star certified (highest level) and wanted to join. So the 3 of us went there. Eventually me (non certified) in a single kayak guiding them in their “fancy” old style glass fiber canoe. We booked the day before the kayaks. HKD300 per head. MTR to Wu Kai Sha. Little walk to the shop and time to paddle.
First stop at Yeung Chau 0:21.
With high tide, tons of wading in clear water.
Alexa had a problem with her Five Tens 😅 Old old model, she had not checked them before using and the outsole completely unglued. So 1/3 on our coasteering they needed to go back to the starting point while I continued fast on my own. As mentioned, nothing interesting. At the very North I saw something that looked like a path (1:24). So I went up the hill. Strange looking path… Until I realized that it was not human made but open by a big goat that lives there. Tons of its poo all around and I even saw it deep in the bush.
Meet with Alexa & Fama and more kayaking. This time to the mangrove. Entry (1:53) here.
It is a peculiar formation that allows deceiving pics. It is not a jungle. It is quite small. Even tinier Instagram version a little bit further West.
From there we had back in opposite direction, but stopping in Center Island (2:15) first.
Alexa & Fama ate their snacks meanwhile I checked the island. Mainly flat rock and sandy areas. So easy to go fast.
There is only a tiny tiny section, on the North East, that has similar rocks to those I had already seen in Ma Siu Chau (2:39).
Little paddle more and back at the starting point for an easy half day out.
