Cute small stream very close to the city. One more in the area. Mostly within the woods, small falls and pools and not the cleanest water.

  • Beauty/fun: 5/10 cute but with little flow, tons of small waterfalls and pools. The water doesn’t look polluted, but with quite some sediments from the hill atop. There are nicer options around but not a bad one for those who want to continue exploring these hills.
  • Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 6/10 if trying to climb in the waterfalls. Significantly easier without, I guess 4/6 although I didn’t check carefully the side options. Not the most clear exit atop, but there are several ribboned options that should bring you shortly to more civilized paths.

I had just come from Europe the previous day and I was trying to get rid of the jetlag. I woke up relatively early. Sunny. Time to check a short stream and decide later what to do. Slow relaxed exploration day on my own. MTR to Fo Tan. Slow jog up to Hill Lodge 曉廬. You could take mini bus almost till here. The start.

Video

In seconds in the stream and in a few minutes with the views of the city under. Most of the stream is within the woods though.

With several thin waterfalls and shallow pools. On (2) there are two consecutive waterfalls that I climbed in that I guess most hikers skip. Not the easiest, as you do not have good handholds in the first, quite smooth, on the right side (0:43). I chimney pushed myself up. Highest waterfall (1:35) is approx. 4 meters high and easily scrambable on its right side.

At around 300m elevation it got completely dry (2:36). Although after (heavy) rain for sure water comes down through this part of the stream. I saw a group of older hikers going to the left side of the stream, West direction around (4). In my case I continued on the OpenStreetMap mark and eventually I found quite some ribbons heading towards the Trigonometric Station of Kau To Shan. From there you have quite some options. In my case I went down and connected with Kau To main stream (next post). For easiest exit I’d go to the Helipad and from there down to Fo Tan again. You can go otherwise on this path SE direction. A relatively clear and hiked one as per what I see in quite some photospheres.

Everything you should know before stream hiking.
