Several climbable waterfalls, deep pools, relatively short, easy transportation, easy exit. Perfect for testing beginners who want more.
- Beauty/fun: 6.5/10 pretty climbable waterfalls, clean water, a few pools. Bushy upper part if trying to do it all.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 7/10 if trying to climb all the waterfalls & navigate the bushy upper part, 5/10 without. Relatively easy side paths to avoid the falls & short route in easy mode.
- The map (how to download to your phone offline maps)
See full screen & the Garmin track (going up Wu Lei Tau, Wu Lei Tau Left Left, and Wall Mountain streams in exploration mode on my own in late August) & second track with Tania with Wu Lei Tau first half & Mountain Wall out through the Left tributary after some rain in October. Pictures and videos are from both days.
The closest public transport option is the Pak Kong bus stop. Slightly more than a kilometers uphill concrete from there. If you are taking a taxi or driving your car you could do so till the very entry just next to the road here (1 on the map).
In no time you will arrive at a small dam. I have seen a ladder every time there for really easy pass. Watch the video at 0:16
If it is not there and you are leading weaker buddies a rope can be handy. I’d advise to bring 20m so that you can help in the falls after.
Leave the dam behind and a few minutes later the first climbable waterfall. The lower part is slightly more difficult, you might want to start on the left dry part. Upper is perfect for beginners to start building their confidence on wet rocks. Find good handholds, feet placement, etc (1:05)
Just after a water gathering pool and a sign saying not to swim there. Be considerate. Avoid this water section and full stream use cloth cover instead of sunscreen. No insect repellent either. The sign is there because I guess most hikers enter the stream through this point (2).
A little later the first significant fork (3). Continue on the left. Plenty of ribbons in all this section. In (4) the highlight of the stream. Two consecutive waterfalls with deep pools under. Both have side paths on their left, but the fun is going in. The first one is shorter but slightly more difficult atop (1:30).
The second one has tons of roots (1:57) to help you climb. As usual check thoroughly before trusting all your weight in any root or small foothold rock. You might want to use the rope to help weaker buddies in both.
Upper there are still waterfalls & pools. Smaller but nice.
A man made wall section (3:04), the flow diminishing the higher you go. The main exit (5) is a very clear path that crosses the stream itself.
With Tania we decided to go down here and go directly to Wall Mountain stream. Second video of my first day exploration.
I found several snakes en route. Including the recorded big ratsnake. At 0:33 the aforementioned hiking path connection. It is way more bushy almost from the start and the flow diminishes rapidly. After (6) was dry even in August & finding the way was not easy. I spent some time looking for broken branches and others until I was able to find again red ribbons. Some more easier bush walk and I came out here on the MacLehose trail.
I do not recommend this section but for the most hardcore “want-to-see-it-all”s.
