Coasteering the full perimeter of a really nice island. Pretty rock formations, varied colors, a long tunnel, fun challenging traverses.
- Beauty/fun: 9/10 a really nice beach with coral areas, a big sea cave tunnel, varied rocks, clearer water.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 8/10 a demanding route if you are trying to reduce the amount of swims. 9/10 if you try all the traverses shown below. Little protection to East swell and wind waves.

Long time ago I said that I would write about the full route. In May we got a good weather and wave forecast day
and I took several buddies there. Five of us would coasteer it while four others would swim around. Speedboat booked this time through Splitdyboat. 9:30 depart from Saikung, return at 15:00. A bit tight, but considering that the swimmers should be able to swim it all calmly in approx 2 hours…
We started anticlockwise from the beach.
The Western shoreline has brighter colored rocks. Fragile sandstone in some areas. Quite picturesque including a very tight tiny tunnel.
The ladies climbed it in. You better do so without the backpack and fully covered. Pure sandpaper.
Latter more pretty rock formations, the first fun traverses and the tunnel.
This time we didn’t swim through it but continued on the rocks and turned around all the island. Nothing specially interesting in that little section that I didn’t know.
After the opposite side of the tunnel a few rocky “beaches”, several caves (shallow or deeper where I used the torch) and the first clear high cliff jumping spots. These guys wanted to challenge themselves, so serious traversing time without much water below too.
A bit later we connected with the section already written about on the North. Video of all the previous.
We arrived 30 minutes before the pick up time and I took advantage to run and check the hiking path on the Northern side. The start is on the beach within the woods and then you can even see it clearly from the satellite image.
A bit bushy, with some elevation gain and loss, and therefore not really a shortcut. I would use it only in case of a sudden thunderstorm. Not the best place to be in any case either. BTW, if you see pictures of Bluff with a column-like structure.
People hike there through these paths. Nothing especially interesting compared with the coasteering. Actually, you pass next to it, but on the seaside behind. Just kinda Zhangjiajie 張家界 looking.
