Green Egg island is one of those little secrets that became mainstream in 2020. Mixed coasteering route heading West towards Silverstrand.
- Beauty/fun: 6.5/10. Big sections of very clean water, an iconic spot, a cave full of bats, a few fun scrambling areas, long intermediate sections with very easy coasteering.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 7/10 in the way we did, actually that would be the grading mainly for the very last part before Little Palm beach. It can be significantly easier (4/10) with a few extra swims. Tons of potential early exits. It can be affected by East swell and wind, check the forecast beforehand.

There is no direct public transportation option nowadays. Therefore we took MTR to Hang Hau and a green taxi from there to the Clearwater Bay Equestrian Centre.
Head to the coastline and find the hiking path heading
to Green Egg island.
Just a few years ago the path was bushy and infrequently hiked. Now it is a lot more open with tons of ribbons and ropes set by hiking groups. Here going down to
the beach in front of the island.
Enjoy the view (a lot better with higher tide and early morning without the crowds) and start coasteering. With several points where we
needed to jump into the beautiful spring sea water.
Arrive back at the Equestrian Centre and continue under the Kite area
Flattish and unremarkable for a while.
Passing next to this historic engraving.
Nothing remarkable up till Tai Hang Hau.
It can look significantly different. This time with high tide we waded long, but fun with really clear water and tons of little fishes around. By the way, the tide and wave forecast when we started. Just for reference.
The rest of Lobster Bay
is as easy until you arrive here.
Starting the real coasteering. You might find a bridge, ropes, and others set by fishermen. Check them carefully if you are going to use them. I’d recommend not.
Several sections of fun scrambling unless you want to swim quite some.
We found a little heart, 小心小心 😉
A little later a longer “inlet”
and slightly more challenging scrambling getting into
the high cave with tons of bats.
And the trickiest scrambling on the very end.
If you are not really comfortable with low-level climbing or you do not have the best grip shoes, you might want to swim a bit more here before
arriving at the back of Little Palm beach.
I left the ladies here and started jogging on the sandy area
and small boulders later.
Nothing especially interesting up till Silverstrand beach. I had swum around before, but I wanted to check that the bathtub and other @#$ structures had been removed… If for fun/beauty, I would recommend more the purple line on the map. Not bad. Coasteered with Tyler after our visit to Shelter Island. You can call a cab/Uber to pick you up in Little Palm beach or otherwise walk up the road for approx half an hour to any of the bus stops in Clear Water Bay road.
Video edited by Alexa, partly recorded by me. You can see a big part of the route, the golden spring seaweed, fishes, and definitely the bats! With very epic music 😉
