The East shoreline of Tai Tam Bay offers an easy route full of small beaches and old structures. Good for beginners or “want to see it all”s.
- Beauty/fun: 5.5/10. Several beaches en route, old villages and WW2 structures, a few nice rocks. Nothing spectacular but cute and easy.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 3.5/10. Very protected bay good even with strong East and North winds or swell. Easy scrambling. Continuous potential easy early exits. Three swims required, longest a bit over 100m.

And Colin’s in case you want to do it reverse and/or with stream start and end.
Buses from the East of the Island heading to Stanley pass through Tai Tam Reservoir (North) stop. Go down the stairs next to the dam and walk
till the small pier from where wakeboard speedboats depart. You could take a taxi or Uber up till there too.
Getting ready for the first swim
to cross to the opposite shoreline. You could start further north. But it is a slightly muddy and sandy area in low tide.
Nothing too messy. Just beware of the oysters and other shellfish around.
Flattish initial section
and the first beach.
The scrambling is relatively easy
with several nice looking rock sections.
The small village in Lan Nai Wan has several semi-collapsed houses. You could skip it with a short swim. In our case, we see it all. Including the stream
the previously more photogenic pond (too much trash around now) and
Lin Hook Sin Koon temple.
And walk back again on the rocks.
Here one of the few “technical” scrambling points. Completely avoidable just with a 10-meter swim or wade.
The guys wanted to enjoy the little fun as much as possible.
Arriving
at a semi-abandoned village.
Which also has houses where people live and even have a kayak base.
Cross the beach
and back again on the rocks.
Another small beach and buildings.
The last rock section before arriving at
To Tei Wan. Another beach where you can find the The Hong Kong Hobie Club of small catamarans enthusiasts.
Easy exit to bus stop by concrete stairs there. If you continue
soon you will find the types of rocks that are characteristic of Cape D’Aguilar. Although here more horizontal.
A little later the quarry
and the compulsory swims
with jump option.
Two water sections.
Back on man made big boulders
before arriving at another long beach.
On the very end you can find a small, lower flow stream.
Used as the short escape route.
If you want to go a bit further and/or through an easier exit just continue till the pillbox. Time to remove all the wet clothes
and up the
now (Nov2020) clear
path out.
Walk on the concrete road West direction and in little time you will find the roundabout where some buses stop
or continue to the main road a little further if you want to have more transport options, with all (mini) buses and taxis coming back and forth to Shek O.
