This can be a super simple adventure or just a walk. Including it on the web only because quite some people have asked me about the viewpoints.
- Beauty/fun: 3/10. Not the usual fun written about. A little bush walking or even more simple hiking up to picturesque viewpoints.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 2.5/10 even the bush walking is simple with relatively clear paths and ribbons guiding you up to the viewpoint. For easier hiking bring a pair of shoes with some lugs (mid size suffice) that will provide you better grip on the sandy surfaces.

Do you want to do it extra easy or have a minimal “adventure”? If the former, the Government built in 2019 a viewpoint (green) with simple access. You could be hiking there in tons of different ways, as just next to MacLehose trail. Above a point to point short option (green line) starting from Tai Tong. Eventually, you will arrive at this sign
and in no time at the viewpoint itself.
Go back to MacLehose and continue on your way. Easy dirt paths and concrete all around.
If you want a bit of adventure first you could start in any of the streams around, Wong Nai Tun the closest, Lo Fu & Tan Kwai a bit farther, relatively easy all of them. Best connections marked with brown lines.
If you are here only for the best viewpoints head to Siu Lam or even closer So Kwun Wat Tsuen. Walk towards the reservoir and find the concrete path of MacLehose trail heading towards Tuen Mun. Eventually you will see some stairs (turn the pic below to the right) an a faint dirt path with some ribbons around here.
Follow the GPS track if in any doubt and just look back every now and then to enjoy the views of the reservoir behind.
I have marked the viewpoint that I like the most. Slightly nicer than the official one, but subjective.
Continue going up and you will find more badland like paths.
Choose the one heading North East (check GPS if in doubt) and you will continue seeing the reservoir below through different angles.
Slightly sandy slippery downhill and you will connect with a road and MacLehose trail. Use the green line to exit or continue hiking around through the endless paths in the area. One of my trail running training areas.
