Transliteration of West Dog’s Tooth pit (西狗牙坑) also known as West Zig-zag Brook (too many names) is another fun and trickier way to go up to that area.
- Beauty/fun: 6.5/10. Dry-ish stream with nice views on top. You can connect with the Dog’s Tooth up to Lantau Peak and even South Heaven’s route. All the reservoir area is very photogenic.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 7/10. The initial stream section is easier but the upper part is very steep and has loose rock and small sandy areas. If following the proposed itinerary, you will hike down & up initially within an infrequently hiked streams. Get ready for possible overgrown areas.

You could start, as most of Dog’s Tooth paths, at the South road going up the Lantau Shek Pik country trail. More bus options there. If you want to avoid some altitude gain you can start in the Buddha and go down the same trail instead. Green line in both cases.
Eventually you will arrive at the dry-ish stream to hike down. In Jan 2020 it was relatively open and easy to navigate within, although it looked infrequently hiked.
Nothing specially interesting
until you arrive at the reservoir.
There, old rock pilings,
nice looking vegetation,
the water lines…
This is definitely a nice “adventurous” photo shooting site. Perfect for Ina and other photographers.
Continue walking South direction and you will find (check GPS) the entrance to Zig Zag brook.
Even in January it had little water, crystalline.
Quite picturesque in the open areas.
With some overgrown zones too until you arrive at the connection again with the main path. Exactly here.
Continue up the stream.
In January, after quite some days of dry weather, it had almost no water after a little ascent.
After passing the tree line seeing the reservoir below.
The scrambling is not so steep, but there are loose rock sandy areas.
So find secure hand holds and ascend carefully.
You are going up there, rocks in the middle (views from West Dog’s Tooth).
Up we continue.
Last views of the reservoir
before getting into the wood area on the upper right side.
And in no time you will connect with the Mid Dog’s Tooth path among the trees in front here.
Go up through the Lifeline to Lantau trail and down to the Buddha (purple line). If you are ready for a trickier adventure, you can try the Tiger Roar rock river downhill.
Everything you should know before stream hiking.
