Jungle + underground fun in the further West. Only for those looking for more remote outings with the good and bad. Some won’t like it.
- Beauty/fun: 6/10 if you are OK with heavy bush walking and confusing navigation. Fun scrambling, surprising underground structures.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 6.5/10 it took me a while to understand the boulders and tunnels structure. Some of them can be dangerous with bad quality rock. I dislodged a 70-100kg big rock checking one of the non-ribboned chambers. Bring headlamps. Full clothing coverage, pruners, and even a small rope are recommended. Helmet if you will try the unmarked tunnels.

As I mentioned in the previous post I had already checked part of this little maze on my own after being in the side tributaries of Lung Kwu Sheung Tan. But not completely. It is quite confusing with ribbons of different colors heading to different areas and small chambers with none. It was getting late and I decided to escape through the Eastern exit (magenta line).
Therefore the second time with Alexa and Enrique we went almost directly there to have plenty of time to check it further. Video of that day with quite some visual clues of what you will find there.
January 2024. Meet in Tuen Mun and taxi to 達豐倉 Tathong Yard. Up the most direct path possible to Intestine Chamber. Already explained.
Once out we continued on the hiking path and after passing the 沖溝 Gully we went down on its South side. Not the most clear route atop. Trust the initial good GPS signal. Sandy slightly slippery, then into the forest with ribbons, then just following the less bushy part of the bush, vines to downclimb, and eventually the mini caves of the rock forest.
You will need to take route decisions from the get go. Ribbons in opposite chambers. As usual, I would say that the green color ones will bring you through easier passageways. But difficult to follow. Just be patient and retrace as many times as needed until you find your way. We needed to squeeze through tight holes, jump (slide) down from boulders and cross tons of vines
on our way. A few big chambers. After the one below, with the very photogenic liana, time to decide again. If you take our way this time (heading further West and taking the South Exit), you will need to pass very bushy (not thorny)
sections before you get again to big boulder and cave sections. After a high scrambling already able to see the 3 Stacked Boulder. You still need to earn it though 😄
Watch the video, 3 minute onward. A corner that Alexa did not like at all, big fall under and you either need to trust the (good) grip or squeeze closer to the wall. Just little after the tightest of the holes to go through. Another scramble where I needed to set the rope for the tired lady. And finally sandy path up to the aforementioned rock. From there easy path back down to the road.
Now that I know better the structure, if I would bring friends there for the first time, I would mix and start by going up Lung Kwu Sheung Tan stream, check some of the mini caves there, up through Intestine Chamber, and into the Great Boulder forest checking it all.
