Just checking one more of the varied terrains in Hong Kong. Little treasure for the bird enthusiasts. Interesting contrasts for the curious.
- Beauty/fun: 3/10 cute pics, interesting ecologically. Zero “adventure”.
- Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 1/10 the only challenge is navigation if you want to see as much as possible. A small maze.
- The map (how to download to your phone offline maps)
See full screen & the Garmin track.
I wanted to jog long. I had never been in the area. So my first exploration was on foot. The proper Wetland Park itself requires a guided tour, in Cantonese. But I could see on the Satellite images quite some of the further East ponds accessible. I ended up hiking and jogging just next to the border fence. Not the easiest navigation with some private properties, construction sites and others. But I figured out an easier option + I found a renting chain that allowed taking and returning bicycles in different locations. So next time I brought friends in biking mode.
I have already mentioned the main bike lane in the HK biking post. Rent the MTBs in Yuen Long, LK Bike shop (HKD70 per day), and start cycling on the lane. Pok Wai South Road next to the Kam Tin River is when starts to improve. Riding without the previous traffic nearby.
Just next to the peculiar (for HK standards) Fairview complex we got into the Wetlands.
Ponds connected by strips of land. Mainly gravel and some dirt paths. Old houses above the water. We also found one without almost completely dry.
We didn’t only see birds. Dogs and goats too. The latter on the ponds next to Lok Ma Chau.
Also quite some people fishing. Even if there were clear signs that it was forbidden. There are reports of illegal dumping too…
We continued on the bike lane. Arrive at Sheung Shui
and return the bike in another LK shop. Just a relaxed day out.
