Tsing Tam stream (清潭石澗) is an infrequently hiked & relatively wide jungle stream with several nice pools and waterfalls.

  • Beauty/fun: 6.5/10 Several nice waterfalls, picturesque jungle, but last part and some other sections being overgrown (and bit thorny, the bad thing of not many hikers in it) deducts 1 point
  • Difficulty (check this link if new here, this is not your standard HK hiking web): 6/10 In general, it is a level 5, but the complicated exit due to all the fallen trees etc and thorny areas increase the difficulty.

Kam Sheung Road MTR Station and a short taxi ride is the easiest way to arrive at the starting point. You will need to walk up concrete till the Tsing Tam irrigation reservoir. On its right, you will find ribbons and a path taking you to the stream.

In late summer of 2017 the area was badly hit by typhoons. Thereof several trees were knocked down, making the route bit more adventurous. Last time there (June 2018), even before arriving at the stream itself… Coming out from the jungle

into the stream itself.

You will start finding little waterfalls almost from the start, but you will need to hike way higher till you start seeing the bigger ones, marked on the map. Most of the stream is walkable within the water with good grip shoes. It is wide enough to handle quite some rain, with medium and sometimes strong water flow. Only the biggest waterfalls

will require you taking side paths, which are relatively clear. The only not very clear path is the exit… Just before the waterfall I found a couple of exits marked with ribbons, the purple one being significantly easier. If you want to do the whole stream, once you are getting close to the end start looking for safest looking exists on your left up steep (possibly muddy) side. The hiking/mountain biking path (marked with orange in the Opencyclemaps) is just meters distance.

Video and pictures.

Last visit in August 2018.
